TOEFL OVERVIEW

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) measures the ability of non-native speakers of English to use and understand North American English as it is spoken, written and heard in college and university settings. Most people who take TOEFL are planning to study at colleges and universities where instruction is in English. In addition, many government agencies, licensing/certification agencies, as well as scholarship and exchange programs use TOEFL scores to evaluate English proficiency.

The TOEFL computer-based test (CBT) consists of three main parts: Reading, Listening and Writing/Structure. These three sections are equally weighted and the total score is 300. The 3.5 hour test is made up of mainly multiple-choice questions and 1 essay.

From June 2006, Singapore will offer the TOEFL internet-based test (iBT) instead of the CBT. A new Speaking section will be introduced and the Structure section will be taken out. Therefore the 4-hour iBT has four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. These four sections are equally weighted and the total score is 120. The emphasis is hence shifted to integrated skills and the new iBT is arguably a better gauge of the students' proficiency to communicate ideas in English.

To score well on the test, knowing the structure, instructions and mindset of the test makers is imperative! We aim to impart these strategies through our proven and rigorous programs
